Description and functions
“EtnoDzikowiec” is a project for 20 residents of the Dzikowiec municipality aged 60 and over. It combines culture, creativity, local heritage and the empowerment of older people. Its aim is to develop the knowledge, skills and social engagement of older people. Furthermore, the project aims to strengthen relationships and foster a sense of agency among participants.
Older people will not simply be participants in pre-planned activities. On the contrary, they will choose the workshop topics that interest them. This will ensure that the programme better meets their needs and interests. Participants will also share their own experiences and skills.
Creative and cultural workshops for older people
The project includes workshops on culture, art and regional heritage. Participants can choose from a range of activities, including handicrafts, embroidery, painting and folk art. They will also learn new techniques and create their own pieces.
The sessions will be based on non-formal education. Therefore, practical work, discussion, collaboration and the sharing of experiences will be key. At the same time, the facilitators will adapt their approach to suit the participants’ abilities.
Culture beyond Dzikowiec too
“EtnoDzikowiec – a project for older people” also includes an educational trip. Participants will visit a cultural institution in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship.
During the trip, the senior citizens will learn about art, folk culture, traditions and regional heritage. In addition, the programme may include crafts and an introduction to various artistic techniques. This will give participants the opportunity to experience culture first-hand outside their home town.
The trip is also intended to break down barriers to accessing cultural activities. This applies in particular to people who rarely visit museums, galleries or similar venues. The reasons for this may include cost, a lack of transport or other constraints.
The senior citizens will showcase the results of their work
To mark the end of the project, the participants will organise a closing event together. This will include an exhibition of the work produced and a team-based cultural knowledge quiz. In addition, the event will combine the presentation of the results with a Christmas wafer-sharing ceremony for the elderly.
The senior citizens will select the works for the exhibition themselves and prepare descriptions of them. They will then help to set up the exhibition and present the results of their work. This will enable them to be active contributors to the final event, rather than merely participants.
What will the EtnoDzikowiec project change?
The project is set to deliver tangible results. At least 15 people will broaden their knowledge of culture, art, tradition and heritage. At least 15 participants will also develop at least two new practical skills.
In addition, at least 14 people are expected to become more willing to engage in further social or cultural activities. The project will also help to foster relationships between older people. As a result, participants will gain further opportunities to work together even after the sessions have ended.
Who is carrying out the project?
The project is being carried out jointly by the Social Impulse Foundation and the ‘Prymule’ Rural Housewives’ Association. Both organisations combine project experience with an in-depth knowledge of the local community.
